Should I buy a franchise?

Buying a franchise is a big decision. In this post energie fitness for women Chief Executive Peter Croney gives you some tips on the decision making process

The first question you should ask yourself is not do I want a franchise but do I really want to go into business for myself, whether that’s on your own or in a franchise.

This is the question you should ask yourself. Am I willing to take the risk of going into business? So what is the risk? Well you might think that your risk is that you could lose all the money that you have put into the business. You would be wrong because actually it could be much worse than that. You could lose all the money you have put in plus, if you took out a loan still have to repay it and be stuck with a lease on a property that you still have to pay oh and by the way if you offered your house as security you could lose this as well.

Lots of people just like you have taken exactly that risk. Some have done very well and prospered some have lost everything including their house and knowing some of these people personally I can tell you it is a most unpleasant experience to say the least.

I have borrowed and invested over £15m during my time in business and leased many properties but I have never put my house on the line, I have never given a personal guarantee, and I have never lost more than the money I have put into a business. Oh yes I’ve lost money on some business pretty much every entrepreneur has. The trick is to make sure that the losses are minimal and the gains are large.

So golden rule number one. if you go into business on your own quantify the risk- resolve to take the risk and then do everything in your power to minimise that risk.

So what can you do?

  • In my experience banks always ask for a personal guarantee. But you don’t always have to give one. If you have no assets you could use a government guarantee scheme.  I have always pointed out that I am forming a limited company for this business for the very reason of limiting my liability and that I will not give a personal guarantee. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t’. If it doesn’t I don’t borrow the money. Lots of people do and some far more successful people than me have although incidentally I got this tip from a former very good business partner of mine and he has also never give a personal guarantee.
  • Landlords nearly always ask for a personal guarantee. The chances are good though that if you stick to your guns you can often proceed without them. You may have to give a rent deposit though. There are also various ways of limiting personal guarantees.
  • Just as the banks always ask for a personal guarantee make it a habit to always say that you don’t give them. You can always back down

A good franchisor will help you with the above points so make sure you ask them how. A very good franchisor can do a whole lot more.
